What Makes People Happy at Work?
Meet James.
James is a recent college graduate and is looking for his first full-time job. It is important to James that he finds a company that meets what he’s looking for in a suitable career.
James’ list of requirements includes:
- Flexible hours
- A pleasant working environment
- A relaxed work culture
- A clear progression path up the ladder
- More job perks
- And the ability to work remotely
The most important aspect James is looking for in his first job is a company that promotes a good work/life balance. To James, having a job with a good work environment and one that promotes a good work/life balance is more important than a job that can’t offer these assets but offers more money.
While money isn’t a huge factor in James’ search, having a healthcare plan is important to him. To James, and many others entering the workforce, a company that doesn’t offer a healthcare package is a huge issue and could be a major deciding factor to accept or not accept a job offer.
As workplaces evolve, James is a bit worried that one day his job will be obsolete. To ensure he always has a place within the job force, he decides to spend his spare time learning what he can about technology and how to implement it into his daily work.
While interviewing at a company he’d like to work for, James is asked what he thinks makes people happy at work.
Thanks to his own list of requirements, James is sure that having a pleasant working environment and flexible hours are at the top of the list. Thanks to his knowledge about what makes new employees of today happy at work, James lands his first job at his dream company and is very happy in his new position.
Companies must find ways to ensure the daily lives of employees is weaved into their work. The environment, the culture, and just a few perks can be critical to ensuring happy and healthy employees.
